Interview with our General Manager of SSWI
Interview with Tom Leonard
Why did you choose to work for SSWI?
It all happened on a whim. I had been working in waste management for years, and I thought SSWI’s mission was innovative and interesting. I decided to give it a shot, and here I am years later.
Where do you see the company IN 10 years?
I see SSWI being more widely accepted, especially if the composting facility in California that is modeled on SSWI is up and running soon. There are only 12 facilities like ours in the world, and I think what we’re doing is the future of solid waste management. There just isn’t enough space for direct landfilling anymore.
What do you think our strengths are? Weaknesses?
Our strengths lie in our numbers. We compost 60% of garbage received, which is space saved in our landfills. Also, we only run a class III landfill because we compost all the organics that enter our facility. This reduces the amount of leachate and produces less water and air pollution.
Our community outreach is one of our major weaknesses. We have to get the message out there to notify residents of how crucial our facility is and how essential it is for them not only to be on board with us and what we do, but also to be active recycling participants so that our multi-million dollar equipment won’t break down so often.
How do you see SSWI as bettering our community?
We help keep organics out of the landfill, which preserves space and reduces air and water pollution.
